Human resources has undergone one of the most significant remote transformations of any function. The shift to distributed workforces made remote HR professionals not just viable but essential. For senior HR professionals with 10+ years of experience, the opportunity is substantial, but the competition varies dramatically by sub-function and the positioning requirements are specific.
It depends entirely on the sub-function. Talent acquisition and recruiting roles are highly competitive. People operations, HR business partnering, and compensation/benefits roles at the senior level face much less competition. The least competitive and fastest-growing sub-functions are HR analytics, people technology, and organizational design, areas where senior professionals with both HR expertise and data/systems literacy are rare.
Senior individual contributors and managers (8 to 15 years) have strong remote prospects across all HR sub-functions. Head of People and VP of HR roles are increasingly remote at companies under 500 employees, particularly in tech and SaaS. CHRO-level roles at larger companies typically require on-site or hybrid presence for board-level interactions. The exception is remote-first companies where the entire C-suite operates distributed.
Two primary issues. First, HR is a broad function and senior professionals often have experience across multiple sub-domains, but ATS systems scan for specific specializations. A VP of People who has overseen compensation, talent acquisition, L&D, and compliance may not match a role seeking a "Head of Total Rewards" despite being overqualified. Second, HR tech keywords matter more than most HR professionals realize: experience with specific HRIS platforms (Workday, BambooHR, Rippling) often serves as an implicit filter.
